From museum visit to kickflip: Amsterdam embraces skate culture
What started as an informal piece of urban space has grown into one of Amsterdam’s most iconic skate spots. Since its opening in May 2025, the skatepark at Museumplein has become an inseparable part of the cityscape. Where grass and tourists once dominated the square, a constant flow of skateboarders, BMX riders and inline skaters now ride across the city’s newest icon.
Skatepark Museumplein: how a temporary spot evolved into a new urban icon
Within just two months of its official opening, it became clear that the skatepark is more than a physical addition to the square: it has turned into a vibrant hub for sport, social interaction and community. The park is alive and not just in summer. Even on drizzly days, skaters find their way onto the course.
What makes this place special is how seamlessly it blends into the square and its surroundings. The park isn’t dominant, but naturally integrated: both aesthetically and spatially. And that was exactly the intention.
From public square to high-end skatepark
For years, skaters used the Museumplein informally, without facilities. Now, there is a high-quality, durable and safe space for urban sports. Nine Yards designed a skatepark that fits perfectly within its surroundings while meeting the needs of the community.
The design is not only functional, but also a tribute to the city: from rails referencing the windows of the Rijksmuseum to masonry inspired by the Amsterdam School. Everything aligns. It’s a skatepark with character, where design and experience come together.
“Everything on the course flows into each other: it just works.”
As one skater aptly put it in an interview with Het Parool. And that sense of flow is exactly what we envisioned: intuitive lines, features that invite play, and a structure that fits the complexity of this location; right in the city center, surrounded by museums, tourists and everyday use.
Compact, cultural and community-driven
The skatepark is compact in design and multifunctional in use. Every day, dozens of skaters use the space; from local kids to well-known skate figures like Diego Broest, Candy Jacobs and Douwe Macaré. But the park is just as much for anyone who wants to watch, learn, connect or simply hang out at the edge of the square.
This aligns perfectly with the Municipality of Amsterdam’s “Public Space Vision 2025,” which focuses on meeting places, movement and shared use of space.
From design to realization: this is Nine Yards
As a skatepark builder with international experience, Nine Yards understands what it takes to bring a space to life. We combine technical expertise with local craftsmanship and ensure that every detail is right, from drainage to radius, from material choices to integration within public space.
Museumplein called for a custom approach. Together with the municipality and local users, we realized a future-proof skatepark that quite literally sets the city in motion.
An icon in the making
The skatepark at Museumplein is still young, but is rapidly growing into a new urban icon. A place where urban sports, architecture and culture come together; and where the city becomes a little more dynamic every day.
