A new sound in Amstelveen; bowl, street and sound wall combined
In Amstelveen, Nine Yards realised a 900 m² skatepark that seamlessly blends street elements with a full-sized bowl. Built with the needs of the community, technical efficiency and the surrounding environment in mind, the park was commissioned by the Municipality of Amstelveen and based on a design by Concrete Matters. Nine Yards then translated the concept drawings into fully executable construction plans.

Skatepark Amstelveen connects bowl and street in one flowing line
What makes the skatepark in Amstelveen stand out is the combination of a street course with a deep bowl section. Bowl features of this size are rarely seen in Dutch skateparks. The layout encourages a wide variety of riding styles, from technical tricks to smooth flow lines. The surface includes different materials – such as tread plate – to enhance the street-style feel. The entire park was built using shotcrete, including the bowl, allowing us to finish it quickly and efficiently without formwork, resulting in a solid and durable structure.
The soundscape and spatial quality of the area were central concerns during the process. Nearby residents voiced concerns about potential noise. In close consultation with the municipality, a sound wall was installed by Nine Yards. The outer street-facing side is covered in greenery, while the inner side functions as a legal graffiti wall – both practical and visually enriching for the park’s atmosphere.
Building for movement with attention to sustainability, people and place
To ensure the park’s longevity, we advised on the use of a sand cunet. The site used to be a grassy field, which posed a risk of ground settlement. By preloading the surface with sand during the first three months, the site was prepared for even settling – an important step in creating a stable and durable foundation.
The collaboration with the Municipality of Amstelveen was intensive and constructive. In addition to our role as builders, we were involved throughout the process – from shaping the surrounding public space to co-organising the official opening. Around the skatepark, new landscaping, benches and street furniture were added to fully integrate the park into its environment.
The festive opening event was facilitated in partnership with the municipality to immediately connect with the neighbourhood and local users. A second event will follow in September, as part of a broader community activation. In this way, the skatepark continues to grow into a vibrant hub where sport and community come together.

Thanks to a smart combination of design, technical expertise, and collaboration with the local government, this project has resulted in an accessible, durable space where skaters of all ages and skill levels can develop and progress.

Landscaping, benches, and new street furniture were added around the park, fully embedding it within its surroundings.

The skatepark in Amstelveen is more than just a sports facility — it’s a place for movement, connection, and expression.
