Retro skatepark with a steel edge in Wassenaar
In the spring of 2025, Wassenaar unveiled or better said: rolled out a brand-new 550 m² skatepark. Designed by Carve and built by Nine Yards, in close collaboration with the local skate community, the municipality gained a durable new spot where style and functionality meet; delivered in record time.
From design to integration in public space
Carve’s design radiates retro: clean lines, recognizable shapes, and a classic flow that appeals to both beginners and seasoned skaters. Through intensive participation with local users, the plan was refined step by step, ensuring the park perfectly matches the wishes and needs of the community.
From the very start, Nine Yards acted as advisor on integrating the park into the public space. This meant carefully selecting the location to avoid tree canopies, taking into account a gas pipeline running through the project area, and ensuring all safety guidelines were met. The result is not just a well-built skatepark, but a place that fits logically and sustainably into its surroundings.
Smart building with steel and shotcrete
For the realization, we chose an efficient, sustainable construction method. The park is largely built with corten steel - a material that does not rust through - combined with shotcrete for finishing. By using metal walls, only minimal formwork was needed, which made both the production and installation process much faster.
This approach was crucial to keeping the project within the set budget and ambitious timeline. From the initial request to the festive opening in April 2025, only six months passed.
The new skatepark in Wassenaar is more than just a collection of ramps and rails. It is a carefully designed, sustainably built, community-driven space ready for years of intensive use. With its retro look, smart material choices, and seamless integration into the public space, the park is a valuable addition to the city; proof that speed, quality, and character can go hand in hand.
